Understanding Remote Start, Auto Start, and Standby Start in Enbase

Learn the difference between Remote Start, Auto Start, and Standby Start and the conditions that control automatic compressor startup in Enbase.

The Enbase Compressor Control Panel supports several startup operating modes in addition to a local start. Remote Start, Auto Start, and Standby Start can allow the compressor to start without a local user initiating the start at the panel.

Because these modes can start equipment without local user action, the Enbase documentation strongly recommends visual and audible warning devices on the compressor skid to alert personnel that a startup has been triggered.

Remote Start

Remote Start allows a remotely located external system to control the starting and stopping of the Enbase controlled compressor.

Remote Start operation depends on the configured mode and supporting signals. The system can be configured for LOCAL ONLY or REMOTE ONLY starting. When Remote Start is used, the Remote Start Permissive must allow the start, and a Remote Start Reset may be required when the system is in a Shutdown state.

The system also uses a list of Remotely Startable Shutdown Codes. If the previous shutdown code is not allowed for remote restart, the system requires the appropriate local reset action before a remote start can proceed.

Auto Start

Auto Start allows the system to automatically restart after a previous shutdown when the required restart conditions have been satisfied.

For an automatic restart to occur, the previous shutdown must be configured as Auto Startable, the condition that caused the shutdown must no longer be present, and the Auto Start timing and permissive requirements must still be satisfied.

A shutdown that is not included in the configured Auto Startable Shutdown Codes requires a user to manually start the system through the local HMI or Hub Control Panel.

Standby Start

Standby Start uses suction pressure to automatically start and stop the compressor. It can be used for applications such as a Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU).

When Standby Start is in AUTO mode, the system can start when suction pressure rises above the configured Standby Start Permissive. While running, it can enter a Standby Shutdown when suction pressure falls below the configured Standby Shutdown Permissive.

If a normal Fault occurs while the compressor is running, the system proceeds to Shutdown and a user reset is required before it can return to the Standby Shutdown state.

How the Modes Differ

  • Remote Start depends on an external remote start or stop signal and the configured Remote Start mode, signals, and permissives.
  • Auto Start depends on the previous shutdown condition clearing and that shutdown being approved for automatic restart.
  • Standby Start depends on suction pressure permissives and is designed for automatic pressure based start and stop behavior.

Safety Considerations

Do not change automatic startup logic unless you are authorized and understand how the change affects the equipment and personnel at the site. If you are unsure whether a compressor should be remotely or automatically startable, contact Enbase Support before changing the configuration.
