Understanding Thermocouple Inputs in Enbase

Learn how Enbase monitors temperature with Type K thermocouples and what factors can affect thermocouple readings and signal quality.

Thermocouples are temperature sensors commonly used in industrial equipment. Compatible Enbase Expansion I/O Modules can read thermocouple signals so temperature values can be monitored in Enbase as Tags.

What Thermocouple Type Does Enbase Support?

The Enbase Expansion I/O Module used with the Enbase Compressor Control Panel supports ungrounded Type K thermocouples.

The exact hardware configuration can vary by deployment, so confirm the supported input type for the Expansion Module installed at your site before adding or replacing a thermocouple.

How Thermocouple Data Appears in Enbase

A thermocouple input is represented by a Tag in Enbase. The Tag can display the current temperature and, depending on configuration, can also be used for trending, alarming, and historical data review.

Why Thermocouple Signals Can Be Sensitive to Noise

Thermocouples produce very small electrical signals in the millivolt range. Because the signal is small, electrical noise from nearby power or ignition wiring can affect the reading.

Installation practices such as keeping thermocouple wiring separated from power wiring, minimizing unnecessary wire length, and properly handling shielding help reduce signal interference.

Thermocouple Polarity

For typical Type K thermocouple wiring, red is negative and yellow is positive. This can be easy to confuse because red is often associated with a positive connection in other electrical applications.

Always follow the wiring documentation and drawings provided for the specific Enbase installation.

What If the Temperature Reading Looks Wrong?

If a thermocouple Tag is reporting an unexpected value, review:

  • The Tag current value and Scan Status
  • Whether the installed sensor is the supported thermocouple type
  • Whether the issue affects one thermocouple or multiple inputs
  • Any related Scan Errors or System Events
  • Whether recent wiring or equipment changes occurred near the sensor circuit

If the problem continues, contact Enbase Support before changing the input configuration or rewiring the panel.
